Slip-on men's shoes and loafers

A Brief Overview of slip-on footwear

Well-maintained and appropriately matched shoes are a hallmark of an elegant man. The variety of styles and models of footwear provides a unique opportunity to emphasize one's own style, stand out, and sometimes even shine in society. The most basic division, and at the same time characteristic, that can be applied to all men's loafers, is between lace-up and slip-on shoes. The difference between these two types of footwear is quite obvious and boils down to the absence of laces or other fastenings (monks) in slip-on shoes.

The lack of laces undoubtedly provides convenience when putting on and taking off footwear (although it is essential to always use a shoe horn). Hence, the popularity of loafers and slip-ons continues to grow, especially in casual and smart casual stylings during the summer months. Increasingly, slip-on footwear is also entering the segment of formal shoes, traditionally reserved for Oxfords. So, how can we categorize them, and what groups can we distinguish among all slip-on shoes?

Division of slip-on footwear

The vast variety of slip-on footwear can sometimes be overwhelming. To properly distinguish and consequently choose the right slip-on shoes for a particular style, we should categorize them into:

Casual slip-on shoes
Semi-formal loafers
Formal loafers

Footwear in this category is characterized by a flexible construction, lightness and broad application in the summer casual stylings of an elegant man. In this group, we can distinguish:

Espadrilles: The least formal shoes in this category. They have a characteristic braided sole and a special stitching connecting it to the upper. Traditional espadrilles have a unique integrated toe cap that transitions into a braided rim around the shoe, and the upper is made of textile material.

Moccasins: Casual slip-on shoes with a distinctive construction. The sole and part of the upper are made from a single piece of leather and the moccasins' construction is completed by attaching the vamp from the top. The resulting characteristic U-shaped stitching sets this type of footwear apart. These shoes are incredibly comfortable, and the use of various leather types in production places them higher in the hierarchy than espadrilles.

Driving moccasins: Intended initially for drivers, these are more formal moccasins. Originally designed for drivers but quickly gaining broader use, they serve as a link between casual slip-on shoes and semi-formal ones. In contrast to traditional moccasins, driving moccasins have a finished sole that is uniquely rolled up at the heel, extending onto the shoe's counter. Classic driving mocs have rubber nubs on the sole, although there is now a vast variety of finishes for this part of the footwear.

Semi-Formal men's loafers

This is the most popular and extensive category of slip-on footwear. It encompasses an immense variety of styles, colors, and materials. The primary representatives are loafers, which continue to gain popularity, introducing new decorative elements and construction variations. The most recognizable and characteristic among them are:

Penny loafers: Featuring a horizontal strap with a distinctive cutout on the vamp. They are the most popular among all types of loafers.

Tassel loafers: Featuring distinctive tassels in the area where penny loafers have a strap. Tassel loafers rank just behind penny loafers in popularity but are more ornate and have a more formal character.

Gucci loafers/Horsebit loafers: Characterized by a transverse metal buckle (resembling a horse's bit) on the vamp. This type of loafers was designed by Aldo Gucci in 1954 and immediately became very popular, with the name of the shoe creator becoming synonymous with this style.

Butterfly loafers: With two interwoven leather straps on the vamp, forming a shape resembling butterfly wings. The intertwined straps create a butterfly-like shape, hence the name "butterfly".

Kiltie loafers: Featuring a uniquely folded tongue on the vamp, reminiscent of the traditional Scottish kilt. These shoes are inspired by golf shoes.

Belgian loafers: Featuring a specific oval apron and a characteristic bow on the vamp. The first models originated in Belgium and quickly gained recognition among fashion connoisseurs. These loafers have a slender silhouette and, due to their thin sole, closely resemble house slippers.

Venetian loafers: Lacking any embellishments at the vamp, closely resembling simple moccasins but with a distinct sole.

Formal men's loafers

The category of formal slip-on footwear is nothing but Oxfords, wholecuts, or brogues without lacing. The development and immense popularity of slip-on shoes, coupled with the ease of putting on and taking off, have led to the creation of increasingly new formal models. How are formal slip-on shoes characterized? Unlike semi-formal loafers, they lack the specific U-shaped connection of the vamp to the rest of the upper. Among formal slip-on footwear, we can distinguish:

Court Shoes: The most formal slip-on shoes, initially worn at royal courts, first in France and later in other European countries. Today, they symbolize classicism, luxury, but also extravagance. They feature a slender line, a thin sole welt, and a bow on the vamp.
Wholecuts: Similar to loafers but without lacing, and like loafers, their upper is made from a single piece of leather.
Wingtips: Slip-on versions of brogued Oxfords.
Side Gusset: Slip-on shoes with elastic bands on the sides in the upper part of the shaft. They originated as a variation of Chelsea boots with a lower shaft.
Faux Lacing: Very similar to side gusset but additionally adorned with an imitation of tied laces.
Additionally, in this category, we find models decorated in the style of penny, tassel, kiltie, or butterfly loafers.
