Leather or Rubber Sole?

Customers often ask us:

Which sole should I choose – leather or rubber?

We’ve heard many passionate debates and read lengthy essays comparing both types. In reality, the issue is simpler than it seems.

This dilemma stems from the attempt to find a single pair of shoes that suits all occasions, outfits, and weather conditions.

Universal shoes don’t exist

It’s impossible to declare one sole superior to the other. For example, using a leather sole on hiking boots is dangerous, while a Vibram sole on patent leather shoes worn with a tuxedo is completely out of place.

When do we use leather soles?

In formal shoes: Leather soles offer elegance and visual lightness, making them perfect for classic models like cap-toe Oxfords or wholecuts. Any other sole type in formal shoes is a faux pas.

In summer shoes: Leather breathes better and is softer than rubber, which makes it ideal for warmer, drier weather.

In office shoes: Ideal for indoor use, where flooring is friendly and dry.

When to avoid leather soles:

Rainy days: Even the best leather will eventually absorb water. If rain is forecast, leave your leather-soled shoes at home or bring them as a change of footwear.

On abrasive surfaces: Leather soles wear out quickly on concrete or asphalt, making them less suited for extensive walking.

Leather sole advantages:

Lightweight and elegant appearance

Breathability and flexibility

Faster break-in time

Less dirt-attracting than rubber

Rubber sole advantages:

High durability and weather resistance

Better traction on slippery or uneven ground

When to choose rubber soles:

Autumn/winter footwear: Offers insulation and slip resistance

Casual shoes: Matches perfectly with denim, tweed, turtlenecks, and unstructured blazers

Hiking boots: Vibram soles are essential for grip and durability

You can’t say one is better overall – it’s like comparing a Porsche 911 with a Range Rover. Both serve different purposes. Ideally, every wardrobe should include shoes with both sole types.

What is sole "topping" ?

It means gluing a thin rubber layer to the leather sole's upper and middle sections. The sole is lightly sanded beforehand. If done improperly, it may damage the stitching and lead to delamination.

Why top a leather sole?

To protect it from moisture and wear.

Is it worth it?

It depends. Leather soles look great and prestigious brands like Borgioli or Barker often design beautiful ones – covering them seems sinful. That said, if you plan to wear your shoes often, topping is the most practical choice.

When should you top your leather soles?

Leather soles mold faster to the foot. However, don’t wait too long. Ideally, topping should be done between the second and fourth week of wear, while the stitching is still intact.

Other ways to protect leather soles:

Oiling: Apply several layers (up to 8) of special leather sole oil (e.g., Siegol). Only suitable for high-quality Goodyear welted shoes.

Overshoes: Use protective rubber covers on rainy days, then remove them indoors. Simple and effective.
