Bologna Shoe Stitching Construction

Our brand, Partigiani, is offering more and more shoe models made using the Bologna stitching method. So far, we've discussed the two most popular methods of shoe construction: Goodyear welted and Blake. Now, it’s time to explain the intriguing Bologna construction.

What is Bologna Stitching?

This technique dates back to the late 19th and early 20th century and, as the name suggests, originates from the Italian city of Bologna. The upper is stitched to a soft leather "sock" instead of a traditional insole, creating a glove-like fit. Essentially, the Bolognese method is a modified version of Blake stitching. A key feature of this method is an additional stitch in the midsole, which allows it to move with the foot and provides exceptional flexibility.

What Does a Bologna-Stitched Shoe Look Like?

The Bologna method, also known as "Sacchetto" (meaning "small bag"), has been a recognized construction technique for over 120 years. The upper is designed like a glove, sewn together with a soft leather "sock" in place of the traditional insole. The result is a classic shoe with the comfort of the most delicate slipper.

How is the Bologna Construction Made?

Shoes made with Bologna construction completely wrap the foot in a leather lining to create a glove-like sensation. During production, layers of leather are doubled to align the soft inner leather with the upper. Each stage of this method is carried out with great precision to ensure both visual harmony and a perfect fit. Although labor-intensive, this technique is the foundation of what makes Bolognese-stitched shoes unmatched in flexibility and comfort. By enveloping the foot with a glove-like leather lining, the Bologna construction eliminates the need for traditional break-in periods, allowing the shoe to adapt organically to the foot's movement. In Poland, only shoes from our brand, Partigiani, are made using the Bolognese method, which has become our specialty and signature feature. Visit our stores in Warsaw and Gdańsk to experience firsthand how a shoe can provide the comfort of wearing a glove or sock.

Advantages and Benefits of the Bologna Shoe Stitching System (Sacchetto)

Lightweight: Shoes made using this method are usually very light, as they lack a rigid reinforced sole.

Good Breathability: The Bolognese shoe construction promotes better ventilation, helping to keep feet fresh and preventing sweating.

Better Quality Materials: This shoe-making method requires higher-quality materials, which translates into durability and longevity of the shoes.

More Complex Production: While this may be a disadvantage from the perspective of mass production, many consider it a benefit. The more intricate production process is often associated with higher quality and craftsmanship.

Greater Design Flexibility: The sacchetto method gives designers more flexibility in creating various shoe styles, allowing for unique designs to be made.

No Need for Break-In: Due to the specific construction, shoes made with the Bolognese method do not require a break-in period – they adapt to the foot almost immediately.

Comfort and Flexibility

Exceptional Comfort: One of the main advantages of the Bolognese method is its exceptional wearing comfort. Shoes made this way feature a soft, flexible, and extremely comfortable upper. The absence of a stiff inner lining allows the shoes to fit the shape of the foot perfectly, almost like a glove.

Excellent Flexibility: The sacchetto method allows for significant flexibility in the midfoot area, enabling natural foot movement while walking. This makes the shoes more comfortable, especially for people with sensitive feet.

Aesthetics

The Bolognese shoe stitching method (sacchetto) offers exceptional comfort, flexibility, lightness, and elegance, making it a popular choice for those seeking high-quality, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing shoes.

Elegant Appearance: The sacchetto method enables the creation of shoes with a sleek, elegant silhouette. The lack of visible stitching on the outer part of the shoe adds to its aesthetic and classy appearance.
